The second, more absurd delivery comes at Blue's funeral (spoiler!), where Frank ends an unfortunate version of Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" with the words, "You're my boy, Blue! You're my boy." It's a line out of nowhere, a nonsequitur that embodies the spirit of the times, when everything seemed to come out of nowhere, and the rest of us could only go along for the ride. Blue (Patrick Cranshaw), of course, is the octogenarian willing to subject himself to extreme hazing just to get into the post-grad fraternity at the center of the movie, and Ferrell's Frank the Tank utters his infamous line twice, slightly reconstructed: The first, "Blue, you're my boy," comes when the frat founders make initiates drop from a rooftop cinderblocks attached by a long string to their penises. Among several memorable lines, it's Will Ferrell's unhinged "You're my boy, Blue!" that best captures the nonsensical, uninhibited joy that can only be expressed by 30-something white guys in America. Despite how annoying it became to hear an endless stream of pastel-polo-wearing guys shouting, "We're going streaking!" and, "I'll do one!" and, "Once it hits your lips it's so good!" among others, that ubiquity is the definition of influence and longevity. If you happened to attend college in the years between 2003 and, oh, 2019, you've heard your fair share of Old School quotes. The "ogres are like onions" scene really is funnier than you probably remember, with Eddie Murphy and Myers' cheeky tête-à-tête, definitely teaching kids (and probably adults, too) a handy metaphor for social penetration theory. Insane, right?! Anyway, Shrek: In 2019, the animation looks terrifyingly deranged-no one needs to see every pore of a fleshy green ogre-but Mike Myers, bless his heart, gives a laudable vocal performance in a Scottish accent for 90 minutes, taking over for the departed Chris Farley, who was originally going to be Shrek. (It was usurped by Shrek 2, which another DWA film has yet to top.) Believe it or not, Shrek premiered at Cannes in 2001, where it competed for the prestigious Palme d'Or alongside Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge and David Lynch's Mulholland Drive. Despite its slow decline into the maw of internet depravity, the first Shrek was a genuine big deal for DreamWorks Animation as its fifth production and highest-grossing to that point. So while we probably could have filled this list entirely with lines from Mean Girls and Anchorman, we had to make some tough choices.ĪLSO READ: 'Looks Like Meat's Back on the Menu, Boys!': Three Orc Actors Discuss the 'Lord of the Rings' Trilogy's Goofiest Quote Universal Pictures There is a virtually limitless amount of excellent filmmaking and screenwriting happening around the globe, from Mexico to South Korea and everywhere in between, so consider "greatest" as modified with "mostly American, English-speaking, Western cinema." And one procedural note: We decided to limit any given movie (including individual films of a franchise) to one quote maximum. We're an American site with English-speaking readers, writers, and editors. (Ever hear the one about sand from Star Wars?) All of these 100 selections have made us cry, laugh, or nod in solidarity, and they frequently pop unbidden into our heads.īefore we get to the list, we have to acknowledge our inherent limitations. Some are so silly we've developed a deep affection for them. Others we included simply because they astonished us in some way: the perfect punchline, the gut-dropping reveal, the brilliantly written axioms. Not every entry on this list has become a meme, though some certainly earn their spots because of that. We thought (and fought) through what moments had lodged themselves into our brains and stuck there. We here at Thrillist Entertainment have made an effort to canonize the movie quotes of the modern era, starting with the year 2000 and running through today. "She doesn't even go here" is an easy way to vent your frustration with an interloper. The "sunken place" is not just a dream state where an evil white psychiatrist traps her daughter's black boyfriend, it's a metaphor for race in America. These days, one way to mark a movie's cultural impact is whether a part of the script has gone viral. ![]() ![]() AFI's 100 Years.100 Quotes remains the bible, reminding us that, yes, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" is pretty significant. ![]() "Here's looking at you, kid." She is meek, but not weak, and when she sings my mouth dropped, especially on “Part of Your World.” Her version of this classic is tasteful yet not overly flashy, just enough of her own touch to make it her own. For example, Halle Bailey truly shined in this role. When it comes to the overall performances, some actors/actresses really shined and some fell flat. It goes far deeper into the character’s individual internal conflicts, it provides backstories to characters who, truthfully, needed it in the animated film, and yes, there are a few new musical numbers that strengthened the film. While on the outside, many aspects of the original still exist in this film, on the inside this live-action tackles what the animated version didn’t and honestly couldn’t. In truth, “The Little Mermaid” (2023) surprised me on every level. Going into the screening I wondered how true to the original, musically and performance-wise, they were going to be. ![]() Shortly before attending my screening, I watched the original 1989 animated “The Little Mermaid.” There were three things I truly appreciated about the original: the passion every actor/actress put into each character, the appropriate use of instruments in each song and the smooth pacing of the film. As I am a fan of the original, I wanted to ensure that this remake did the original justice. Their music could be found sporadically and helped ignite what was called the “Disney Renaissance,” where, as other critics pointed out, Disney started to go back to its roots in animation and created many more animated classics like “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” etc. These men were, and continue to be, some of the most iconic film composers in the history of film music. As both a movie buff and a music teacher, I am a huge fan of both Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s music. Now she really is part of their world…įirst off, I’m a fan of “The Little Mermaid,” not simply the story but also the music. The deal is struck and Ariel becomes a human. “Fine, then you’ll never be with your true love,” shouts Ursula. If she can’t get him to kiss her, however, she’ll turn back into a mermaid and belong to Ursula. All Ariel has to do is get Prince Eric to kiss her in three days, without her voice, mind you, and not just any kiss… true love’s kiss, for if she can, she’ll remain human forever. So Ursuala approaches Ariel and offers her to fulfill her great desire, to become human. It just so happens the sea witch has secretly been spying on Ariel, believing Ariel might be the key to seizing King Triton’s trident and taking control of Atlantica and the seas. “If only I could live among humans, just for one day.” Careful for what you wish for Ariel. ![]() ![]() Overtime, she becomes more and more enamored with Prince Eric. “He’s really different from the rest,” she thinks to herself. Ariel, however, sees a different side of humanity, particularly in one human who catches her eye, Prince Eric. The rest of the family see humans as savage selfish, horrible creatures only out to kill and destroy with no regard for marine life. She’s always been the black sheep (fish?) of the family. The creatures of Atlantica, as well as the sea itself, are ruled by the mighty King Triton who lives with his daughters: Perla, Indira, Mala, Tamika, Karina, Caspia and then there’s Ariel.Īh, let’s talk about Ariel. The animal is considered "finished" when it reaches full weight and is ready for slaughter, typically at around 1,200 pounds, which produces a dressed carcass of around 745 pounds. The mix includes grain (corn, milo, or wheat), a protein supplement (soybean, cottonseed, or linseed meal), and roughage (alfalfa, silage, prairie hay, or an agricultural by-product such as sugar beet pulp). When the cattle reach 600-800 pounds, they are typically sent to a feedlot and become "feeder cattle." In the feedlot, the cattle are fed with a special food mix to encourage rapid weight gain. The calves usually spend 6-10 months in the stocker operation, growing to near full-sized by foraging for summer grass or winter wheat. The calves are weaned from the mother after 6-8 months, and most are then moved into the "stocker" operation. This allows the calves to be born during the milder weather of spring and provides the calves with ample forage through the summer and early autumn. Most ranchers breed their herds of cows in summer, thus producing a new crop of calves in spring (the gestation period is about nine months). The beef cycle begins with the cow-calf operation, which breeds the new calves.
